Masters of the Air: Calum Turner Talks Working With Austin Butler

The Boys in the Boat actor Callum Turner shared what it’s like working with Austin Butler in the upcoming American war drama Masters of the Air, saying that playing best friends with Butler in the show was not, in any way, a challenge.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor was asked about whether he knew any of the impressive cast members before starting shooting the show.

“After my audition, they called and said, ‘We’ve got this guy called Austin Butler who just played Elvis, and we want you too.’ I had sent him a message, but Austin had actually gotten really sick after Elvis,” said Turner.

He added, “I later got a voice note, like, ‘Sorry I haven’t replied, I’ve been in the hospital.’ I just wrote: “Elvis has left the building.” It was like he needed a medical procedure to get Elvis out of his body. But we built a bond immediately. We play best friends in the show, and it’s very easy to be best buds with Austin.”

What is Masters of the Air about?

Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, Masters of the Air revolves around men of the 100th Bomb Group as they conduct dangerous bombing raids over Nazi Germany.

“During World War II, airmen risk their lives with the 100th Bomb Group, a brotherhood forged by courage, loss, and triumph,” the Apple TV+ logline reads.

The upcoming drama is executive produced by Band of Brothers’ Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks, and Steven Spielberg. It stars Butler as Major Gale Cleven, Barry Keoghan as Lt. Curtis Biddick, Anthony Boyle as Major Harry Crosby, Nate Mann as Major Robert Rosenthal, and Raff Law as Sgt. Ken Lemmons.

Masters of the Air is set to debut its first two episodes on Apple TV+ on January 26, 2024. It will be followed by one new episode through March 15, 2024, on Fridays.
