Warner Bros. is hoping to move forward with a sequel to 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise.
On Jan. 9, 2024, Cruise partnered with Warner Bros. in a deal that will see develope, produce, and lead “original and franchise theatrical films” starting in 2024.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy are both hoping that one of these projects will be Edge of Tomorrow 2, a sequel to the film that Cruise starred in alongside Emily Blunt.
“De Luca and Abdy have also hoped to lure Cruise back for a follow-up to the 2104 film Edge of Tomorrow, which the studio already had in development before they took over,” the article states. “(The well-reviewed picture, which cost $175 million, only grossed a disappointing $370.5 million but developed a cult fan base after its release. McQuarrie said in 2014 that Cruise had an idea for a prequel; director Doug Liman said it would be better than the original).”
What happened with the planned Edge of Tomorrow sequel?
Liman initially announced that he had signed on to direct a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, in 2016.
He said at the time, via Collider, “I’ve had some radical ideas about how to make a sequel that would interest me, in the same way that I had ideas of how you make an independent film and then Swingers came along and it was like ‘Aha, that’s the perfect movie for me to test these ideas out on.’ I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels. And again that’s why I try to do things like Invisible that are just, the revolution’s sort of built into the idea. It’s more heresy in the film world for me to pitch things that are sort of unheard of.”
The project suffered from a number of delays since then caused by the actors’ schedules and the COVID-19 pandemic; however, both Cruise and Blunt have spoken about their desire to still return for a sequel should the proper stars align.
