Our Flag Means Death Canceled at Max, Series Creator Issues Statement

The Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby-led television series Our Flag Means Death has been canceled at Max after running for two seasons.

Though the series was well-received throughout its run, Max announced that it will not be going forward with a third season following Season 2’s conclusion last October.

“While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyous, hilarious, and heartfelt stories that creator David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy, and the entire superb cast and crew brought to life,” a Max spokesperson said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). “We also thank the dedicated fans who embraced these stories and built a gorgeous, inclusive community surrounding the show.”

The show’s creator, David Jenkins, shared his thoughts on the cancellation on his Instagram page, where he shared his sadness about the show ending and his gratefulness for the run it had.

The series was created, written, and executive produced by David Jenkins (People of Earth), who also served as showrunner. Executive producers were Waititi, Garrett Basch, and Dan Halsted. The series was another in a series of collaborations between Darby and Waititi, which began when the former starred in the cult-favorite HBO series Flight of the Conchords, on which Waititi was a writer/director.

What is Our Flag Means Death about?

“After trading the seemingly charmed life of a gentleman for one of a swashbuckling buccaneer, Stede became captain of the pirate ship Revenge,” reads the Season 2 logline. “Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes changed after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard. To their surprise, the wildly different Stede and Blackbeard found more than friendship on the high seas … they found love. Now, they have to survive it.”
