David Ayer: ‘James Gunn Is the Bravest Man in Hollywood’

Suicide Squad director David Ayer defended DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn from DC fans on X, who are speculating Gunn’s stance on the director’s cut of the 2016 superhero movie. He expressed his excitement for Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, while also praising him for leading one of the hardest superhero franchises.

“I absolutely can’t wait to see Gunn’s Superman. I have to say this,” Ayer wrote. “Gunn is the bravest man in Hollywood these days. He’s taking charge of the hardest ship to Captain in this industry.”

Who was involved in the Suicide Squad?

Based on DC Comics’ anti-hero team of the same name, Suicide Squad was written and directed by Ayer. It starred Will Smith as Deadshot, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Karen Fukuhara as Katana and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, who became an instant fan-favorite and is now one of the most popular DC characters. Despite receiving mostly negative reviews, the film had still grossed over $726 million at the worldwide box office.

After the success of the fan campaign for the release of the Justice League Snyder Cut, some DC fans have started discussing about the potential release of Ayer’s own of the 2016 movie. According to Ayer, his version was darker and more emotional than the theatrical cut of Suicide Squad. It would have also seen more of Jared Leto’s Joker.
