Cillian Murphy on 28 Days Later Sequel: ‘I’d Love to Do it’

Cillian Murphy is not ready to close the door on a 28 Days Later sequel. While speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Murphy shared he is open to revisiting another chapter of the 2002 zombie horror.

“I’d love to do it,” Murphy said.” There needs to be a script, and Danny [Boyle] needs to find the time, and Alex [Garland] needs to feel that there’s more story to tell.”

Murphy joked that the film would have to be called 28 Years Later because of the long gap between films. All kidding aside, Murphy mentioned that after a recent viewing of 28 Days Later, it still holds up two decades later.

“That is a movie I watched with my kids not too long ago, and I feel that one, you know, it’s aged well,” Murphy said.

Who is Involved in 28 Days Later?

In 28 Days Later, Murphy starred as Jim, a London bicycle courier who awakes from a coma to discover a contagious virus caused the collapse of society. The ensemble features Naomie Harrie, Megan Burns, Christopher Eccleston, Noah Huntley, Stuart McQuarrie, and Brendan Gleeson.

“A group of misguided animal rights activists free a caged chimp infected with the ‘Rage’ virus from a medical research lab,” the official synopsis reads. “When London bike courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma a month after, he finds his city all but deserted. On the run from the zombie-like victims of the Rage, Jim stumbles upon a group of survivors, including Selena (Naomie Harris) and cab driver Frank (Brendan Gleeson), and joins them on a perilous journey to what he hopes will be safety.”

Danny Boyle directed 28 Days Later from a script written by Alex Garland. A sequel, 28 Weeks Later, was released in 2007, with Boyle and Garland serving as executive producers.
