Season 5 of The Last Drive-In with legendary horror host Joe Bob Briggs highlights the Shudder April 2023 schedule.

The weekly double feature showcasing Briggs’ encyclopedic knowledge of each film has been a huge hit with horror fans since its debut in 2018. “Proving once again that ‘the drive-in will never die,’ iconic horror host and exploitation movie aficionado Joe Bob Briggs is back with a new season Fridays on Shudder TV and Sundays on demand. Every week, The Last Drive-In series offers an eclectic pairing of films, running the gamut from horror classics to obscurities and international cult favorites. And from time to time, special surprise guests will drop in on Joe Bob and Darcy the Mail Girl,” reads the show’s synopsis.

April 1

The Blood on Satan’s Claw (1971)

Set in a remote 17th-century village, a group of young people becomes possessed by a mysterious, claw-like object. Is it a part of Satan? The film explores themes of devil worship, possession, and the corruption of innocence. A classic in the horror genre, renowned for its effective use of suspense and timeless exploration of evil and corruption.

Witchfinder General (1968)

Starring Vincent Price as Matthew Hopkins, a corrupt lawyer who travels the country during the English Civil War accusing innocent women of witchcraft in exchange for money. As he terrorizes the populace, Hopkins is pursued by a vengeful soldier who seeks to bring him to justice.

Pumpkinhead (1986)

The film follows Ed Harley (Lance Henriksen), a grieving father who seeks revenge on a group of teenagers responsible for the death of his son. He enlists the help of an old witch to summon the vengeful demon Pumpkinhead, who will exact revenge on his behalf. Directed by special effects master Stan Winston, the film asks what is the price for vengeance?

Slumber Party Massacre (1982)

This cult classic slasher, directed by Amy Holden Jones, centers on a group of high school girls who hold a slumber party at a house while a serial killer is on the loose in the neighborhood. As the night wears on, the girls become the targets of the killer’s violent attacks, leading to a tense and bloody showdown. The movie features a strong cast of female characters and clever subversion of genre tropes, as well as its graphic violence and suspenseful sequences.

Magic (1978)

The movie follows Corky, a struggling magician who achieves success when he incorporates a ventriloquist act into his act. However, his dummy, Fats, begins to take on a life of its own and control Corky’s actions, leading to a descent into madness. The film features a powerful performance from Anthony Hopkins as Corky, as well as effective cinematography and a haunting musical score. Directed by Richard Attenborough (yes, John Hammond from Jurassic Park).

Slasher: Ripper ( S5: Episodes 1 & 2)

A Canadian horror series created by Aaron Martin, S5 takes the franchise to the late 19th century when a killer known as “The Widow” is stalking the streets. Unlike Jack the Ripper, The Widow targets the rich and powerful. The only hope to stop this killer is the newly promoted detective, Kenneth Rijkers, who has an unwavering commitment to justice. However, his determination may lead to his downfall as he becomes another potential victim of The Widow’s brutal campaign. The series features a thrilling cat-and-mouse game between the detective and the killer, with plenty of suspense, gore, and twists to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

April 10

Bog (1978)

“Could we have a Dracula running loose out there?” Nope, just an ultra-low-budget yet endearingly cheesy horror film. The movie depicts an underwater creature that emerges from the depths of the northern Wisconsin woods, craving human blood.

Kids vs Aliens (2022)

A group of misfit kids bands together to save their hometown from an alien invasion. Armed with only their wits and a few gadgets, the kids embark on a mission to thwart the extraterrestrial threat and prove themselves to their skeptical families and friends.
