Following the merger that saw Amazon acquire MGM, Vikander — who starred as Lara Croft in the film — didn’t seem too optimistic when it comes to a new film, saying that the possibility of a sequel was left up to the behind-the-scenes politics of things.

“With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue. Now it’s kind of politics,” Vikander said in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I think [writer Misha Green, who also worked on HBO’s Lovecraft County] and I have been ready, so it’s kind of in somebody else’s hands, to be honest.”

While Vikander didn’t say much else about a sequel, she did say that she would love to see how Green might be able to continue showing off the world. “I’ve been excited to show the world,” Vikander said. “I love what she’s done with Lovecraft County.”

The 2018 film premiered to relative box office success, but received mixed reviews from both fans and critics alike. While Vikander’s turn as Croft was praised by most, some thought the film was bland overall and didn’t do enough to differentiate itself from the 2013 video game it was based on.
